The keystone of Health & Safety
Required by every employer (Section 2 (2) HSWA)

Risk assessment is fundamental to health and safety management. Employers have a legal duty to prepare, or have prepared, assessments of all risks that are likely to cause significant harm to individuals in the workplace, and where there are five or more employees*, keep a record of their findings. Anglia Safety Advisors Ltd can carry out for you, or help you with, risk assessments for your business. Some risks are of a general nature, but others will need to be considered against specific legislation, such as:

  • Fire Risk Assessment (Regulatory Reform Fire Safety Order 2005)
  • Working at Height (Working at Height Regulations 2005)
  • Manual Handling (Manual Handling Operations regulations 1992)
  • Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 — as amended)
  • Asbestos (Control of Asbestos regulations 2006)
  • New or Expectant Mothers (Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999)
  • Display Screen Equipment (Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992)

The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 (MHSWR) regulation 7(1) imposes a duty on an employer to have access to competent advice, either from an internal appointment of a person or persons who have received the appropriate training, or from an external health and safety consultant, or any combination of the two.

For many small businesses the costs of sending someone on a training course to meet the required competency and then allocating the time to fulfil the function can be prohibitively expensive. Anglia Safety Advisors Ltd is able to offer you the service of Competent Person.

After a preliminary discussion to evaluate the risks present within your business, we provide certification to prove competence, make arrangements to be present on your site for an agreed number of days, and offer telephone and email backup support for the interim periods. Additional consultation days on site would be available and charged at the standard daily rate.

Audits are carried out to ascertain the current standards in health and safety. At Anglia Safety Advisors Ltd a health and safety audit looks at safety management in the organisation from three perspectives:

  • Physical safety standards in the work environment — eg Usage of Personal Protective Equipment, machine guarding
  • Safety management systems and procedures
  • Safety culture — the safety culture in an organisation is of key importance in determining how well your safety systems will be applied

Anglia Safety Advisors Ltd can produce an audit report, which provides a detailed picture of how the organisation is managing health and safety and where any shortfalls or omissions exist. The results are measurable and are able to demonstrate to your workforce, customers or local enforcement authority your progress year on year towards meeting your health and safety obligation.

Certain types of accident, including near misses and types of ill health*, will require a report of the event to be compiled and sent to the HSE. You are also obliged to investigate the incident and review your prevention measures to eliminate or at least reduce the likelihood of any reoccurrence of the same accident. In most cases it is probable that your insurance company will also request a copy of the report, so they too can see that you have taken steps to prevent a further incident of the same type.

Anglia Safety Advisors Ltd can come to your premises and investigate an accident with a completely independent view of the events and circumstances surrounding the incident, and make recommendations for an action plan to prevent future repeats.

* Visit the HSE’s website for the full list of reporting requirements and how to make a report under the Reporting of Injuries Diseases and Dangerous Occurrence Regulations (RIDDOR) 1995.

Anglia Safety Advisors Ltd is happy to consult with you on your training requirements, as well as write and present a training package bespoke to your needs. We can cover areas such as induction, evacuation and manual handling. Please contact us to discuss your requirements.
